A Fab Time for the PHAB Club
A very special evening was organised by Explore Orkney (www.exploreorkney.com) in September 2009 for members of the PHAB (Physically Handicapped Able Bodied) Club.
The evening started with a light supper at the Merkister Hotel. The evening was calm and a beautiful view of the loch was enjoyed by all. The food was delicious and members of the PHAB club relaxed in this peaceful environment.
From there, members of the PHAB club were transported to Via House in Sandwick for an evening of Orkney folklore and music by the peatfire. The studio was warm and atmospheric with the smell of peats burning in the fire.
The stories Lynn and John told were narrated with enthusiasm and character: they dressed for the part and used a variety of props. Lynn was very dramatic and engaged with our guests whilst performing, which kept everyone’s spellbound attention. Steven the fiddler played an arrangement of tunes and everyone either danced, clapped their hands or tapped their feet to the sound of the music.
The smiles on everyone’s face suggested they had really enjoyed the evening. All too soon it was time for the PHAB club to board the bus and return home.
Lynn Barbour said: "It was a very special experience to commit Via House resources to such a rewarding event. John and I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to such a happy evening for the PHAB Club people."
Special thanks go to Explore Orkney for organising the event, Via House, the Merkister Hotel, J & V Coaches for transportation and to The PHAB Club, to all the volunteers and carers who give up their time to facilitate their member’s attendance and enjoyment of this very rewarding evening.
